How Am I Managing the Holidays, Shopping and Travel Stress?
November 13, 2024

Every holiday season, I travel to my country, Colombia, to visit my family, and I also travel for my birthday during Thanksgiving. At the beginning, I used credit cards to buy gifts, tickets, and birthday celebration experiences. I noticed that I was paying double the interest rates during the entire year, and then the cycle started again. So, I decided to plan and save for my trips and gifts ahead of time. The first thing I did was create a budget for travel tickets, expenses, and shopping. Believe it or not, it is not only the tickets and hotels but also clothes and luggage, fees, permits, parking, tours, etc... All these things come up and it is good to be prepared. With all these expenses on my radar, I started saving in a specific account. A few months before my trip or the holidays, I freelance and consult on projects to get some extra income. This is a great way to pay for your trip before it happens and save some money for other expenses without tapping into your regular budget. When shopping for the holidays, I set budgets per person, per family, and per department at work. It is easier when I can see the amount of people I want to give gifts to. To watch my spending and stick to my budget I do the following:
Instead of buying gifts for every coworker, I plan a potluck party, bake a cake for each department or bake cookies with a handwritten note for each coworker. Gifts from the heart.
In my family we play Secret Santa for the adults, so we only buy one gift instead of going on a shopping frenzy for every member of the family. I do buy gifts for the little kids or do activities with them. After all, the most important thing is to be together and be grateful for all we have.
I keep an eye out for sales and discounts to maximize my budget. With careful planning, I can enjoy the holidays without financial stress or debt.
And of course, I am giving back and sharing my blessings! It is very important to me and my family to give back, so we volunteer for non-profits. We also put together groceries, clothing items, toys, among other things to donate to our community. I am very thankful for all my blessings. It is also a great way to spend time together as a family with the holiday spirit in our hearts.Happy holidays to all and happy saving!
